Article Last Modified: 7 months ago

Rune Factory 4: Special, which is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, is set to have updated graphics and additional post-wedding gameplay that can be explored with the protagonist's chosen spouse. It's important to get this edition, as linking your game to the upcoming Rune Factory 5 will allow players to view exclusive cameos from characters of past games.

Rune Factory 4: Special Hits The West February 25, 2020

The Rune Factory series finally receives a “new” installment since the past 8 years when Rune Factory 4 was released in 2012 on the Nintendo 3DS. This installment, however, is a port of the 3DS game with some extra features, such as extended gameplay with the Newlywed mode and other DLC.

Fear not, however, because this is most likely to increase hype, sales, and awareness of the future installment of the series for the Nintendo Switch, Rune Factory 5. More details on that later though.

What makes the Rune Factory series so great?

If you haven’t played one of the Rune Factory games yet, know that they plays like your average Harvest Moon game (which is a life/farming simulator). Where Rune Factory takes a turn is in providing players a rich combat experience and epic story-line that caters to the JRPG traditionalist.

Like in Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon, the protagonist whose initial name is Kyle, but is changeable to whatever you want, *Spoilers Ahead* leaves the town that the game is set in shortly after the birth of his child, who you then control for the remainder of the game. *Spoilers End*

Rune factory is a series that, as a whole, has everything a casual JRPG fan wants and literally caters to our needs.

There’s battling, life simulation, amazing music, character development, skill-leveling, and you get married on top all that (it’s that waifu kinda-ish.) If there was anything lacking in the Harvest Moon games, it was just that it could use some fighting in it. Rune Factory listens to the fans in this game and brings about a light fighting experience with a decent amount of variance in game-play options (different magic spells and weapons are available). What more could you want?

The Archival Edition Pre-Order Bonuses are Fan-Essentials

Maybe you want some collectibles to appreciate your game even further. The specific contents that sets the purchase of the Archival edition of the game apart from the Standard edition are as follows:

  1. 160 Page Art Book that showcases art from all the previous Rune Factory titles (Rune Factory, Rune Factory 2, Rune Factory 3, Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny, and Rune Factory 4)

  2. Rune Factory 4 Special OST CD, which consists of 36 songs

  3. Swimsuit DLC (classic Japanese game developers, haha), which allows characters to appear wearing their swimsuits

For the hardcore fans of the game or for anyone who is trying to appreciate the art, music and lore of Rune Factory will be pleased to know that the Rune Factory 4: Special ~ Archival Edition comes with a number of pre-order bonuses at the price of a full Nintendo Switch game ($59.99). Rune Factory 4: Special ~ Standard Edition will only run you $29.99 on release day, which is pretty good considering this is an upgrade of a 3DS port that actually has a fair amount of content.

Considering that both Rune Factory 4: Special and Rune Factory 5 will feature cameos from the characters of previous Rune Factory titles, it will be nice to admire the art and music of the games that they come from through these exclusive bonuses from the archival edition.

The Archival edition is a great way to get into collecting, especially if you never had the chance to play Rune Factory 4, as you’ll receive the full game and all of these bonuses for the price of a newly-released Nintendo Switch game. I’ve never been one to get into collectors items, but I think that this time I might because I’ve always loved the gentle anime style used by the game’s artists.
